Project: The evolution of accents in Greek
Host institution: Department of Linguistics and Philosophy, MIT

This research project explored the accentuation of Ancient Greek and aimed at conducting a comparative study of accentuation in Ancient Greek dialectal varieties and, especially, on Attic, Doric and Aeolic in order to: (a) pose and explore questions pertaining to the factors that yielded the genesis and propagation of accents in such systems, and (b) investigate the phonological and morphological conditions that triggered or assisted accent loss in Aeolic and Doric, and hence led to the transition from an accent system to a fixed one.

The research was conducted at the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at MIT (August 10, 2008-October 10, 2008). Prof. Donca Steriade, who is an expert on Ancient Greek phonology, sponsored my project and collaborated with me on topics of common research interests.
